GeneSight® Testing Process – What to Expect

At Growing Light Psychiatry & Wellness, we offer GeneSight® testing to help personalize your psychiatric care. This genetic test examines how your DNA may influence your response to certain medications, helping reduce the trial-and-error process of finding the right prescription.

Step-by-Step Overview

1. Sample Collection
Testing is quick and painless with a simple cheek swab—no needles required.

  • In-Office Option: Collected during your visit.

  • At-Home Option: A GeneSight® kit is provided with step-by-step instructions so you can collect and return your sample at home.

2. Insurance and Cost Information
Before submitting your sample, we strongly recommend calling your insurance provider to confirm coverage and your potential out-of-pocket costs.

  • GeneSight® reports that the maximum out-of-pocket cost is $300, but many patients pay less depending on their insurance.

  • If your plan fully covers the test, your cost may be minimal—or even zero.

3. Sample Analysis & Results
Your sample is sent to GeneSight’s certified lab, where it’s analyzed for specific genes that affect how your body processes medications.

  • Results are usually ready within 7–14 days.

  • The report is sent directly to your provider for review.

4. Follow-Up and Review
At your next scheduled appointment, your provider will review your results with you. The GeneSight® report uses easy-to-read, color-coded categories that indicate which medications may be more or less effective based on your genetics.

  • GeneSight® is a supportive tool—it does not replace a full psychiatric evaluation, clinical judgment, or ongoing monitoring.

  • Your treatment plan will continue to be based on:

    • A thorough evaluation of your history and current symptoms

    • Your treatment goals

    • Potential side effects and drug interactions

    • Past experiences with medications

    • Psychoeducation and strategies for wellness

The results are designed to support shared decision-making between you and your provider—not replace it.
